Dr. Mahipathi Madhwacharya Joshi was born in a small village called Nimbal in Karnataka on May 10th, 1935. The village is in the southern part of the state in what is called the Bijapur district.
He founded the Joshi Eye Institute in 1967. He began by opening a private practice in Hubli. He was the first native of Karnataka to open his own private practice. Today, the institution has grown massively and operates from 2 locations, the original location in Hubli and another location opened in Dharwad.
Dr. Joshi is known to conduct regular free eye camps and numerous educational programs for eye care professionals and specialists. He created and opened the first eye bank and donation program in Karnataka. He helped to create and found the Karnataka Ophthalmic Society in 1980.
Dr. Joshi was awarded the Raivotsava Prashasti in 1989 from the Government of Karnataka. He went on to be honoured with the Padma Shri in 2016. In 1997, he was awarded the National Award of FIE Foundation and then Lifetime Achievement Award from the All India Ophthalmological Society in 2015.
Owing to Dr. Joshi’s vast array of achievements and contribution to the field of opthalmology, the Karnataka Ophthalmic Society has now instituted an award called the Dr. M. M. Joshi Best Paper Award.
