Dr. P. Namperumalsamy was born on January 11th, 1939 in Ambasamudram, Theni in Tamil Nadu. He is one of the founders of the Aravind Eye Care System and is the standing Chairman Emeritus of Aravind Eye Hospitals.
Dr. Namperumalsamy began his training in the United States and then went on to start the first Vitreous Surgery Centre at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. He is currently a member of multiple organisations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the All India Ophthalmological Society and the Retina Society, USA.
He has been part of numerous published works including 189 scientific papers and also 8 different textbooks. He has used his expertise and knowledge to help construct multiple centers across the world including a Centre of Relevance and Excellence for retinopathy in diabetic patients. He is associated with TOPCON, the Government of India and the World Diabetes Foundation based in Denmark.
Dr. Namperumalsamy has been awarded multiple awards and honours over the years. These include a Padma Shri Award from the Government of India, Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and he was also named one of the top 100 most influential people in the world in 2010 by Time magazine.
