Prof. Dr. S. Natarajan is not the first ophthalmologist in his family. His father, Prof. Dr. N. S. Sundaram, and his grandfather, Dr. Natarajan Pillai, were also renowned faces in Ophthalmology.
Dr. Natarajan completed his schooling and his education till his post-graduate training in Chennai. He trained under Dr. S. Badrinath at the Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai from 1984 to 1988 where he worked as a Vitreo Retinal Surgeon.
Dr. Natarajan is one of the founders of the Advisory Council for “Centre for Excellence in Health Care Management” at the Great Lakes Institute of Management. He has been awarded many different honours and awards including the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award in April 2002 and the IIRSI Gold Medal in August 2011. He has received an American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award as well.
Dr. Natarajan has held many prestigious positions including the President of the Ocular Trauma Society of India, the President of the Sankara Nethralaya Alumni, Chennai and the President of the National Society for Prevention of Blindness in India for the Maharashtra Branch among other titles and positions. He is also a member of numerous academic and foundations internationally.
